Day 6 - GA to DC Spring Trip 2026

April 1, 2026 - We couldn’t leave Jekyll Island without riding the bike trail one more time. We rode out to the historic district, then crossed the island to the ocean view side. We hadn’t ridden this section of the trail. Large rolling dunes separate the trail from the ocean. Because this is the beach side of the island, it was more crowded. We decided we liked “our” trail better so we cut back across the island and finished the ride through the giant oaks and quiet forest of the inter coastal side.

We hitched up the camper and headed north toward Alexandria, VA. We stopped for a camper lunch and walk around Savannah, GA. Savannah is interesting and pretty, but is lacking the small town charm we experienced in Charleston. We found RV parking at the visitors center then walked up and back on Bull St. We also enjoyed a treat of ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s. It was warm, 80 degrees and sunny. Why are we heading north?

Back in the truck we set out toward our next campground and bike trail near Virginia Beach. We have to spend one night on the road, so we’re boon docking at the Virginia Welcome Center (they allow overnight parking) but it’s noisy with the sound of generators and traffic from the nearby freeway. I hope I can sleep. We should arrive at Virginia Beach early in the day tomorrow.
