Day 8 - Day 11 - GA to DC Spring Trip
April 3 - 6, 2026- Before saying goodbye to Virginia Beach we rode the bike trail again. We rode almost the entire trail. It emerges from the cypress swamp at a small lake. The landscape changed again when we entered the salt flats. We skipped the last 1/4 mile of trail because it got sandy and riding in soft sand is not fun. After our ride, we packed up and headed north. Next stop, Erin and Steve’s house in Alexandria. Traffic was heavy and it took quite a bit longer than ex

Day 7 - GA to DC Spring Trip 2026
April 2, 2026 - The goal for this trip was to find some warm weather and good bike trails —- Check! We arrived at First LandingState Park at about 11:00. We both slept better than expected at the noisy rest stop so we were up and ready for another adventure in the morning. We couldn’t get onto our campsite until 1:00 so we had lunch and rested/read until then. First Landing turned out to be a great stop. The sites are large and there are boardwalks from the campsites, over th

Day 6 - GA to DC Spring Trip 2026
April 1, 2026 - We couldn’t leave Jekyll Island without riding the bike trail one more time. We rode out to the historic district, then crossed the island to the ocean view side. We hadn’t ridden this section of the trail. Large rolling dunes separate the trail from the ocean. Because this is the beach side of the island, it was more crowded. We decided we liked “our” trail better so we cut back across the island and finished the ride through the giant oaks and quiet forest o

Day 5 - GA to DC Spring Trip 2026
March 31, 2026 - We decided to come to Jekyll Island because we’d heard it had great bilking trails. We were not disappointed! We headed out after breakfast toward the historic district. The paved, well maintained trail took us through stands of huge old live oaks. Spanish moss decorated the sprawling branches. We passed coastal flats and rode among palms and pines. It passes the ruins of early settlers homes and plantations. The historic district consists of beautiful restor

Day 4 - GA to DC Spring Trip 2026
March 30, 2026 - Today was a travel day so I’ll start with the exciting end. We just got back to the camper after a nighttime bike ride. We heard a barred owl hooting and saw an armadillo! We arrived at Jekyll Island State Parkat about 6:00 and we were hungry for dinner and anxious for a little exercise after sitting in the car all day. While Andy unhitched the camper I check online for food options. The 24 Coastal Grill looked promising and it was only 3 miles away. We decid

Day 3 - GA to DC Spring Trip 2026
March 29, 2026 - Today we toured the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. The mansion and gardens are beautiful. Andy checked AI about parking and crowds and it advised that we arrive early because the RV lot can fill up. I guess AI was thinking it was the summer season, because when we arrived at 9:30, we were the first ones in the lot. It never filled up. We had a leisurely breakfast in the camper and set out to explore. The mansion was grand and the gardens beautiful. The tulip

Day 2 - GA to DC Spring Trip
March 28, 2026 - We explored Paintsville Lake State Park this morning. We found a trail around the lake and walked to the Mountain Homeplace outdoor museum. We were lucky to find the trail because when we ask if there was a trail at the campground office the campground personnel told us we should just walk along the road but that it was a long way. They said, “We didn’t walk much”. The trail was much better than the road. Unfortunately the museum was closed, scheduled to open

Day 1 - GA to DC Spring Trip 2026
March 27, 2026 - We packed up the camper and headed out around 10:45 this morning. It was sunny but cold. We had planned on stopping to bike ride in Columbus, OH along the way, but it was too cold and Andy has a head cold. We stopped at a little city park for lunch. We found what looked like a nice paved levee trail for a walk in Chillicothe, OH. It was close to the highway, but the area was kind of tacky so we only walked for a mile. It did have some nice views of the river
